The UNICEF Lubumbashi office covers the provinces of Haut-Katanga, Lualaba and Haut-Lomami, the capitals of which are Lubumbashi, Kolwezi, and Kamina. Its territories, which cover approximately 15% of the total area of the DRC, have a population of 13.4 million inhabitants, of whom 7.3 million are children under 18 years old.
These territories earn most of their income from agricultural and mining operations. More than 10% of global copper production and more than 60% of global cobalt production come from the provinces of Haut-Katanga and Lualaba. The region's mining resources are exploited approximately 80% by industrial companies and 20% by artisanal mining.
Due to its geopolitical situation, the maturity of its institutions and natural resources, this region experiences stability which favorable of economic growth.
