The project

The collaborative project "DiPlanD: Sustainably produced vegan Vitamin D3 and cholesterol from Nierembergia repens" is anchored in the "Model Region of Bioeconomy for the Digitalization of the Plant-based Value Chain in the Central German Mining Region in Saxony-Anhalt (DiP)". At the JKI, initial breeding on this species of Solanaceae is being carried out to increase the content of dehydrocholesterol and enhance agronomic traits. In addition to material screening and development, breeding methodological issues (flower biology, crossability, heterosis) and genetic inquiries (ploidy, genome assembly, genetic variability, heritability of target traits, etc.) are being addressed. The ultimate goal is to establish a new high-value crop for regional production.
