Plumber jobs in New Zealand aren't what you expect at first
Thing is, lots of people jump in thinking it's just fixing leaks all day. But from what I've seen, it mixes up everything from new builds to emergency calls at weird hours.
Honestly speaking, demand stays high. Especially in Auckland and Christchurch where construction keeps rolling. You won't sit around waiting for work if you're qualified.
How much do they actually pay?
Pay varies a ton. Starting out as an apprentice you might pull in around 45k. Once qualified, most plumbers clear 70 to 90k depending on overtime and where you work. The ones who go out on their own can push past 100k pretty easy.

Big difference if you're in the cities versus smaller towns. Rural spots sometimes throw in vehicle perks or housing help to pull people in.
Getting qualified the real way
You need the right tickets. Start with an apprenticeship through a registered employer. Takes three to four years usually. The theory side happens at polytechnics like Unitec or Otago Poly.
And don't skip the registration with the Plumbers Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board. Without it you're stuck doing helper work only.
- Level 4 plumbing qualification
- Practical hours logged
- Pass the board exam
Some guys do the tradesman route first then level up. Whatever works for your timeline.
Daily life on the tools
Mornings can start early. You might be on site by seven, sorting drainage on a new house or sorting a burst pipe in someone's bathroom. Lunch is whatever fits between jobs.
Look, it's physical. Your back and knees will notice after a few years. But the variety keeps it interesting. One day you're in a fancy new build, next you're crawling under an old villa.
Weather plays a part too. Rainy days in Wellington mean wet clothes and muddy boots for sure.
Where the jobs show up
Trade sites and Seek list heaps. But word of mouth still lands a lot of gigs. Join some local plumbing Facebook groups and you'll see calls for workers all the time.
Companies often need people who can handle both residential and commercial. Gas fitting experience adds a nice bump to your rate.
So if you're already in the trade or thinking of switching, New Zealand keeps the door open. Just be ready for the hands dirty part.
