As per the Ministry of Labour & Employment, the minimum wage for drivers under central sphere in Zone I is ₹30,352 per month effective January 1, 2026. This comprises basic rate of ₹26,970 plus Variable Dearness Allowance of ₹3,382. Overtime is payable at twice the ordinary rate for work beyond 48 hours per week.

Applicants must be at least 18 years for light motor vehicles and 20 years for heavy motor vehicles, with no minimum educational qualification required beyond passing Class 8 for license application. A valid driving license in the appropriate category (LMV or HMV) is mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988. Medical fitness certificate is required for commercial endorsements.

A commercial driving license with LMV for taxis or HMV for trucks, endorsed for goods/passenger carriage, costs ₹200 for issuance and ₹300 for driving test as of 2026. Taxi drivers need a yellow plate vehicle permit from Regional Transport Office valid for 3-5 years. Renewal fees are ₹500 every 3 years for drivers under 50 years.

Register on the National Career Service portal with Aadhaar, PAN, driving license number, and bank details for free profile creation. Upload resume and apply to verified vacancies from employers like transport corporations. Track applications and attend skill certification via Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana centers.
