The Department of Employment and Labour sets the national minimum wage at R30.33 per hour effective 1 March 2026, equating to R5,900 per month for a standard 45-hour week. Electricians must be paid at least this rate unless covered by a sectoral determination. Overtime is paid at 1.5 times the hourly rate for hours exceeding 45 per week.

Foreign electricians qualify for the Critical Skills Work Visa if they hold a Red Seal trade certificate, valid for 5 years and renewable once. A job offer from a registered employer and proof of qualifications are required for application. Processing takes 8-10 weeks at a cost of R1,520.

Applicants need an N2 National Certificate in Electrical Engineering, 36 months practical experience, and a successful trade test for Red Seal endorsement as of 2026. The trade test is conducted at accredited centres costing R2,500. Registration follows with the QCTO.

Submit certified ID, N2 certificate, logbook with 36 months experience signed by employer, and trade test results to the DOL for registration valid from 2026. The fee is R320 per application. Processing takes 21 working days.
