As per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median hourly wage for security guards is $19.75 as of 2026 projections. This equates to an annual median salary of $41,080 for full-time workers. Entry-level wages start at $14.20 per hour at the 10th percentile.
Q What work visa is required for non-US citizens to work as security guards in 2026?
As per U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, nonimmigrant H-2B visas are available for temporary security guard positions if the employer proves a seasonal or peak load need, with a FY2026 cap of 66,000 visas plus supplemental allocations up to 64,000. H-1B visas do not apply as the role lacks specialty occupation requirements. Employer sponsorship for EB-3 green cards takes 12-24 months processing.
Q What education and experience are needed for entry-level security guard jobs?
As per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, no formal postsecondary education is required, but a high school diploma or GED is preferred for 70% of positions. Zero prior experience is needed for entry-level roles, with 1 month of on-the-job training standard. Some states mandate 8-16 hours of pre-employment classroom training.
Q What documents are required to apply for security guard jobs in the US?
As per the U.S. Department of Labor, required documents include a Social Security card, government-issued photo ID, resume highlighting any customer service experience, and proof of high school diploma. Most employers conduct FBI background checks costing $20-50 paid by applicant in some cases. State license applications need two passport photos and $35 fee.
