As per the Department of Employment and Labour, the national minimum wage for packing staff is R30.15 per hour effective 1 March 2026, equating to R5,427 per month for a 45-hour week. Overtime is paid at 1.5 times the normal rate for hours exceeding 45 per week. This applies to all ordinary packing roles unless covered by a higher sectoral determination.

Department of Employment and Labour data indicates entry-level packing staff earn between R6,500 and R8,200 gross per month in 2026, based on bargaining council agreements in the wholesale and retail sector. Experienced packers with 2+ years receive R9,000 to R11,500 monthly. These figures exclude bonuses averaging R500 quarterly.

The Department of Home Affairs requires a General Work Visa for non-EEA foreigners in packing staff roles, as they are not on the Critical Skills List. Applications must include a job offer with salary at least R30.15/hour minimum wage and proof of labour market testing. Visas are issued for up to 5 years with renewals.

No formal qualifications are mandated by the Department of Employment and Labour for packing staff, but Grade 10 completion is standard for 80% of vacancies. Employers prefer 6 months warehouse experience and basic numeracy certification. Unskilled entry is allowed with on-the-job training within 3 months.
