Position Title: Packer

Reports to: Production Coordinators

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Location: Philadelphia, PA

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION/SPECIFIC DUTIES:
• Support operation of a "blister" forming machine. This could be a machine which only forms the blisters or a machine which will form a blister, insert medication, die cut the blister, heat seal a foil backing sheet to the blister sheet encapsulating the medication, die cut the blister package to a specified configuration and automatically insert the blister package into a folding carton.
• Primary Packaging Operations - Capsules or tablets are manually loaded into pre-formed blister sheets, a foil backing sheet is then laid over top of the blister sheet which contains the medication and is put through a heat seal press which seals the foil to the blister sheet and cuts blister strips to whatever configuration the specific job calls for.
• Secondary Packaging Operations - Typically, a blister strip would be inserted into a pre-printed blister card, the card is folded over and put thorough a heat sealing press which seals the blister strip into a cardboard card. When the card comes off the sealing press, one or more of them are loaded into a carton; the cartons are loaded into a pre-printed dispenser or a corrugated carton for delivery to the customer. Frequently in addition to inserting the medication into a carton, we are also required to insert one or more pieces of product literature into the container as it passes along a conveyor line.
• Support operation of a multivac machine. This is a machine, which forms a tray where components are either manually or automatically placed into the tray. The tray is then sealed with tyvek lidding, one or more of them are loaded into a carton, along with one or more inserts and these cartons are loaded into a pre-printed shipper for delivery to the customer.
• Support operation of a bivans machine. This is a machine that forms cartons. These cartons are manually loaded with blister units and inserts. The cartons travel along the bivans machine and are then folded or glued shut. These cartons are then loaded into a pre-printed shipper for delivery to the customer.
• Support operation of a bottling line. Bottles are mechanically filled with bulk drug. The bottles then travel down an automated line where a cap is placed on the bottle. The cap is then heat sealed and re-torqued to assure proper closure. The bottle then has a label affixed to it and is typically either manually packed into a carton or the bottle itself is manually packed into a pre-printed shipper for delivery to the customer.
• Working on a pouching line. This is a line that forms and seals three sides of a pouch from a roll of pre-printed foil. Product is then placed into the pouch through the opening on the top, which has not been sealed. After introducing product to the pouch the top is then sealed. The pouch is then typically manually loaded into a carton. The cartons are then manually packed into a pre-printed shipper for delivery to the customer.

The work our packers perform can involve any or all of the above.

REQUIREMENTS:
• This position requires standing, next to a conveyor belt, stationary work table, or piece of machinery/equipment for the duration of the eight (8) hour shift. Employees are rotated every 2 hours to a sitting and standing position, alternating job functions. (Employees receive one 15 minute break & one hour lunch break.)
